The College Money Factor

The cost of earning a four year degree ranges from tens of thousands upwards to hundreds of thousands of dollars – And it increases steadily each year.

Considering an investment on the same scale in a home, a business, a work of art, or any other high value item, and the words “due diligence” would spring immediately to mind.

Some people would be able to perform some of these measures themselves, but most would call upon experts to guide them through the unfamiliar areas …

The same can be said of the college admissions process …

… which is complex, not just because of forms, procedures, and financial implications, but also because of the many options available and the desire to find the “best match” for the student.

Parents avoid private consultants for a variety of reasons, the main ones being:

  • Perceived cost
  • The concept that information is “free” (on the internet)
  • Belief that high school counselors provide the same service

But are these perceptions “Penny Wise, Pound Foolish”?

With a commitment of thousands of dollars as well as four plus of a student’s most formative years, doesn’t it make sense to seek expert help?

Some counselors prefer not to engage in financial aid services.

Those who do offer such services can provide major assistance in obtaining financial aid, assisting with paperwork, and identifying colleges that are more generous with merit money (gift aid), or that have better four year graduation rates (a major saving right there).

This alone can save a lot of money for the family and prove to be a significant return on investment.
