Why College Counseling Works:
Families usually ask themselves and often ask us their own version of this question regarding college counseling during our initial meeting.
When you really think about it, this will be one of their family’s life shaping decisions.
Why would they rely on a third party to organize, inform and guide them on this journey?
After all, there is plenty of information in the public domain: the internet, high schools, colleges, books and magazines that offer college counseling, that would allow them to do it all by themselves.
Ironically we often find that the answer is dependent on the family themselves, as individual family circumstances drive the true value they gain.
Student talent, interests and traits, family financial resources and savvy, as well available time to design and implement a plan vary widely. So do their stress management skills…
… and this process is packed with stress.
That said, the reason college counseling (from a fully qualified counselor) works for parents and students is that we typically help them resolve one or more of the following challenges:
Connecting the dots… We see some of parts of the process but how do we put them together to make a successful plan…
The Money Factor… The total dollar value of college education compares closely to other large investments…eg. home purchase, buying a car, planning retirement, all of which typically involve quality professional support…
It is My Child We Are Talking About… Having a resource that is knowledgeable, reputable and reliable that will listen to my specific circumstances and reduce the stress we are all under…
Confusion and uncertainty… We hear conflicting answers from the media and self proclaimed experts, but do not have time to research this on our own. How can we tell what is useful and what is hype?…
As qualified and experienced counselors, committed to the families we work with, we do make a difference.
